House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters is claiming that a new rule from the Trump administration that helps Americans is “cruel,” and she wants President Donald Trump to withdraw it.
Waters and more than 20 Democrats are attacking a proposal from Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson that would kick out illegal aliens from a program and give priority back to the American people.
Democrats are calling the proposal “cruel” and “senseless.”
From Washington Examiner:
The proposal, published Friday in the federal register, would target families in which at least one member is living in the country illegally.
Current rules already bar immigrants without legal status from receiving federal housing subsidies, but families of mixed immigration status — with at least one person being a legal resident — are exempted so they can all stay together.
“This proposed rule is yet another proposal from HUD under your leadership that fundamentally contradicts the agency’s mission ‘to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all,’” the Democrats wrote in a Friday letter to Ben Carson, the Housing and Urban Development secretary. “This cruel and needless targeting of struggling immigrant families only contributes to historic patterns of inequality, which ultimately hinder the U.S. housing market and American economy.”
The previous rule allowed illegal aliens to benefit from subsides by living with relatives who were legal citizens.
Essentially, one legal immigrant was allowing several illegal aliens to benefit from the program, which took away from American citizens being able to take part in the program.
“We need to make certain our scarce public resources help those who are legally entitled to it,” HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a statement. “Given the overwhelming demand for our programs, fairness requires that we devote ourselves to legal residents who have been waiting, some for many years, for access to affordable housing.”
“Because of past loopholes in HUD guidance, illegal aliens were able to live in free public housing desperately needed by so many of our own citizens. As illegal aliens attempt to swarm our borders, we’re sending the message that you can’t live off of American welfare on the taxpayers’ dime,” a Trump administration official said.
The Trump administration estimates that around 32,000 households nationwide benefit from federal housing subsidies despite being headed by illegal immigrants.
HUD reports that millions of American citizens on currently on a wait list for government-assisted housing.
However, they have been neglected and forced to wait for years because so many illegal aliens took the resources and financial assistance.
Now, under Trump, the American people will be given priority.
