On Friday, former Vice President Joe Biden joked about touching people during a speech he gave to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. This statement comes just after multiple women came forward and accused the potential 2020 candidate of harassment.
John King of CNN played the clip of Biden during the speech where he joked about being given permission to hug a little boy.
“I get — I’ve talked to a lot of people around the vice president. He doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong. He says he welcomes the character debate. But he says he gets it,” King started. “He doesn’t get it if he’s not understanding the women think their space was violated, that they were disrespected. They’re not going to find that funny.”
You say disrespect. So earlier in that speech, he was talking about how people treat blue collar workers, how they treat wait staff. He says, ‘It matters how we treat people.’ Exactly,” The Daily Beast’s, Jackie Kucinich noted. “It matters how these women feel. It matters if they feel like they were disrespected by the vice president or former vice president. That’s what matters here. And this — his jokes today run counter to that web video. There’s no other way to see that.”
King responded to Kucinich by saying, “He had to know walking onto the stage that moment and then he makes what he considers to be a joke which I suspect a lot of other people, especially the women involved here, are going to find offensive.”
“I think you’re getting at the fact that the touching issue is far from Biden’s only problem. He’s run for president several times and hasn’t been successful. Democrats generally don’t run candidates — or don’t nominate candidates who have run before,” Politico’s Eliana Johnson noted. “They haven’t done that for a long time. It’s very telling that Barack Obama is not backing his former vice president. Instead Obama and his former aides have been very warm toward Beto O’Rourke. And finally the lack of discipline. There’s a time for jokes and a time for seriousness.”
Pretty surprising statements coming from CNN! It appears that they are jumping on the anti-Biden bandwagon just like many other Democrats.
Last week, former Democratic Nevada Senator Lucy Flores came forward and described her unfortunate encounter with Biden in 2014. This statement from Flores prompted several other women to come forward and explain their similar encounters with Biden.
“Just before the speeches, we were ushered to the side of the stage where we were lined up by order of introduction,” Flores wrote. “As I was taking deep breaths and preparing myself to make my case to the crowd, I felt two hands on my shoulders. I froze. ‘Why is the vice-president of the United States touching me?’”
“I felt him get closer to me from behind. He leaned further in and inhaled my hair. I was mortified,” Flores said. “He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused. … I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me.”
On Wednesday, Biden responded to the allegations during a short video by saying, “Social norms are changing.” He failed to apologize for his actions and the recent joke he made about hugging a little boy makes it seem that he really isn’t sorry.
