Something is seriously wrong with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
While speaking to the Center for American Progress on Wednesday, Pelosi suffered several brain freezes, lost her train of thought countless times, and falsely claimed that there are “two co-equal branches” of government.
There are three branches of government — legislative, executive, and judicial.
Pelosi ended up catching her mistake and correcting herself, but the moment was nonetheless embarrassing for the most powerful Democrat in Congress.
“First of all, let me just say, we take an oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” Pelosi said.
“Democrats take that oath seriously, and we are committed to honoring our oath of office. I’m not sure that our Republican colleagues share that commitment, and I’m not sure that the president of the United States does, too,” she claimed.
“So, in light of the fact that the beauty of the Constitution is a system of checks and balances— two co-equal branches— three co-equal branches of government,” she corrected with an awkward laugh.
“A check and balance on each other,” she continued. “Con— Constitution spells out the pri— pa, uh, the duties of Congress and one of them is oversight of the president of the United States, another one of them is to impeach the president of the United States,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi slurring herself into embarrassment came on the same day that she was accused of being rude and disrespectful while in the Oval Office.
President Donald Trump ended an infrastructure meeting at the White House on Wednesday after telling Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that it was impossible to work together on infrastructure when Democrats are pushing more investigations in Congress.
While leaving, Pelosi rudely went after the president when he was not around.
“I knew he was looking for a way out,” Pelosi said when Trump left the room, according to the New York Times. “We were expecting this.”
White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway, who was still in the room after Trump left, replied: “Respectfully, Madam Speaker, do you have a direct response to the president?”
Pelosi said she was responding to the president and not his staff.
“Really great,” Conway said sarcastically. “That’s really pro-woman of you.”
After leaving the meeting, Trump addressed reporters in the White House Rose Garden and tore into Pelosi for suggesting earlier on Wednesday that he engaged in a cover-up during Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
This has been a busy week for Pelosi.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Pelosi had a contentious closed-door meeting with Democratic leadership over impeachment.
In this meeting, Pelosi reportedly told top Democrats that they were not ready to push impeachment and that they essentially needed to wait a little longer.
