American families have come a long way since President Trump took office two-and-a-half years ago — but what happens to them in the future entirely depends on how we vote in the next presidential election.
My father-in-law will announce his re-election bid from Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday. It will be an important and powerful milestone for the president, but, more importantly, it will be a defining moment for American families, many who struggled to get by financially throughout the decade before he took office in 2016.
As the president makes his announcement, that struggle won’t be far from his mind — he continues to fight for those families and deliver economic results for them that the Democrats said were no longer possible.
The fact is, the Trump administration is doing more to strengthen American families now than any administration in recent memory was able to do — or tried to do, for that matter. And should President Trump lose the White House, households across this great country will lose the gains they have made under his administration.
Thanks to President Trump’s economic policies, for example, American families are more prosperous. According to the Heritage Foundation, married couples with two children saved an average of about $2,917 on federal taxes last year as a direct result of the president’s signature tax cuts.
Since Donald Trump took office, the U.S. economy has added hundreds of thousands of jobs — pushing the unemployment rate to a 50-year low of 3.6 percent. It’s actually the lower-paid fields in America that are seeing the greatest earnings increase today. As a result, millions of working parents are becoming financially stable, resulting in a better quality of life for them and their children.
The President Trump’s groundbreaking tax reform also doubled the child tax credit, and my sister-in-law Ivanka is spearheading his administration’s efforts to empower women and advance bipartisan family leave policies that will further assist young families struggling to manage the rising costs of child care.
As of last year, the White House has secured $6 billion to fight the ongoing opioid epidemic in America — a drug crisis that continues to devastate far too many families in far too many communities.
President Trump also knows that families have a right to be safe in their own communities — which is why immigration reform continues to be his number one priority. Sadly, the establishment politicians in Washington have failed for years to secure the border, allowing violent gangs and drug traffickers to infiltrate American cities. This has turned out to be a deadly mistake.
As a parent, I can’t begin to imagine the pain of losing a child to violent MS-13 murderers. My father-in-law has personally gotten to know so many parents who have endured such pain, and he pledged to them directly that he will never stop doing everything in his power to protect American families from such hardship. Thankfully, President Trump’s effort to secure the border will make it harder than ever for criminal aliens to enter our country and prey on innocent lives.
Donald Trump also understands that too many minority families have suffered under our unfair criminal justice system, which resulted in the incarceration of a generation of black men and teenagers who committed petty crimes without the chance of rehabilitation. By signing the First Step Act last Fall, the president has successfully reformed our prisons and sentencing guidelines, ensuring that former inmates have all the tools that they need to become productive members of society.
“This legislation reformed sentencing laws that have wrongly and disproportionately harmed the African-American community,” the President explained. “The First Step Act gives nonviolent offenders the chance to reenter society as productive, law-abiding citizens.”
Now, with his announcement of his new initiative, Second Chance Hiring, the President is helping to ensure that former inmates have a fighting chance to stay out of prison and become productive members of their communities.
Donald Trump deserves a second term in office for one simple reason — while he won the 2016 election, the real winners of his presidency are the millions of American families who are better off today than they were just a few years ago. We must now give President Trump a chance to build on these remarkable achievements by voting for him in 2020.
His milestone in Orlando on Tuesday is a milestone for American families as well, and a cause for real celebration and optimism as we look ahead to 2020 and beyond.
The next presidential election is right around the corner, and every parent in America will have to make an important choice about our future. I want to raise my children in a country that fights for our communities, ensures our safety, and guarantees genuine economic opportunity for all.
How about you?
