Former President Barack Obama’s top FBI lawyer is coming clean and admitting that fired FBI Director James Comey could be in serious legal jeopardy.
As noted by The Washington Examiner, former FBI General Counsel James Baker said on Monday that he expects Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz to find “mistakes” committed by the bureau in its handling of the Trump-Russia investigation.
Horowitz is currently investigating how Obama’s FBI and DOJ launched the Russia investigation and whether everything was done legally. The IG is also looking into the applications filed with the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which pertains to one-time Trump campaign adviser Carter Page being spied on during the 2016 election
Baker, who admitted last week the inspector general makes him “nervous,” said the government watchdog will probably find some errors.
“The inspector general is looking at everything we did,” Baker said on CNN. “If the IG usually finds mistakes that we made, so I expect him to find mistakes this time.”
Baker said last week at an event in Washington, D.C., that he took a leading role in overseeing the FISA warrant applications to obtain the authority to spy on Page. Baker said on Monday he does not believe there was any intent from the people he worked with to do “anything wrong or illegal,” including politically motivated spying.
Baker was appointed FBI general counsel in January 2014 and reassigned by FBI Director Christopher Wray in December 2017. Last year, it was reported that Baker was resigning, and since has written for Lawfare and joined the R Street Institute
This comes after Attorney General William Barr appointed a federal prosecutor to investigate how the Russia witch hunt began and whether the FBI’s surveillance of the Trump campaign in 2016 was legal.
On Monday, news broke that Barr appointed John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to conduct the inquiry.
“Sources familiar with matter say the focus includes pre-transition period — prior to Nov. 7, 2016 — including the use and initiation of informants, as well as potential Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) abuses,” the report said.
VOTER POLL: Should Obama Be Arrested For Illegally Spying On Trump?
It added: “An informant working for U.S. intelligence posed as a Cambridge University research assistant in September 2016 to try to probe George Papadopoulos, then a Trump foreign policy adviser, on the campaign’s possible ties to Russia, it emerged earlier this month. And, Papadopoulos told Fox News, the informant tried to ‘seduce’ him as part of the ‘bizarre’ episode.”
Earlier this month, Barr put the final nail in the collusion coffin.
Barr reiterated countless times that Robert Mueller found no evidence that Trump, his campaign, or any American colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
But now the tables have turned — and Barr is honoring his pledge to investigate those who started the Russia witch hunt.
Some Obama officials are likely very worried about this and what will be uncovered.
