Soul singer Gladys Knight has agreed to sing the national anthem at this year’s Super Bowl in Atlanta, and she just blasted Colin Kaepernick. In a statement to Variety, Knight said she is aware of why Kaepernick claims he is protesting the national anthem, but made it clear she wants the song to have its “purpose” again.
I understand that Mr. Kaepernick is protesting two things, and they are police violence and injustice,” Knight wrote to Variety. “It is unfortunate that our national anthem has been dragged into this debate when the distinctive senses of the national anthem and fighting for justice should each stand alone.”
The statement continued: “I am here today and on Sunday, Feb. 3, to give the anthem back its voice, to stand for that historic choice of words, the way it unites us when we hear it and to free it from the same prejudices and struggles I have fought long and hard for all my life.”
Kaepernick has a long history of making disgusting anti-American and anti-police comments that have not sat well with many people.
Over Labor Day weekend, Nike revealed that Kaepernick would be the new face of the campaign, which previously to embody athletes that display courage, sacrifice, and heroism — something Kaepernick does not even come close to representing.
In April, Kaepernick was given the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award, and he used his acceptance speech to describe police officers using deadly force against minorities as “lawful lynchings.”
In April 2017, the Colin Kaepernick Foundation donated $25,000 to Assata’s Daughters, a group named in honor of Assata Shakur, a woman who was found guilty and convicted of murdering New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster and sent to prison.

In Aug. 2016, Kaepernick slandered America’s flag while defending his decision to kneel during the national anthem.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
The cop-supporting activist often boasts about promoting one race over another, supports cop-killers, took a knee to disrespect the national anthem, and raised $25,000 for a group honoring a cop killer.
Polling also shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans disagree with players disrespecting the national anthem and the American flag.
With everything considered, many are applauding Knight for her bold statement and comments about wanting the national anthem to have its “purpose” again.
The anthem should be associated with the brave men and women who sacrificed everything to protect the nation, not a millionaire athlete using his platform to smear police for attention.
