Here’s the scoop, via Daily Wire:

President Trump made his name as a real-estate man, and now he is reportedly contemplating the biggest purchase of his life: buying Greenland.

The Wall Street Journal reports, “In meetings, at dinners and in passing conversations, Mr. Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its abundant resources and geopolitical importance, and, according to two of the people, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.”

Denmark owns Greenland, although Greenland is self-ruled, At over 836,000 square miles, Greenland is the world’s largest island (Australia and Antarctica are considered landmasses.) Despite its enormous size, only 56,000 people live in Greenland; that’s because three-quarters of Greenland is covered by a permanent ice sheet.

More from The Hill:

As the Journal noted, it is unclear how the U.S. would go about purchasing Greenland, the largest island in the world.

Roughly 56,000 people live on the mostly self-governing island. Foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Journal’s report.

Some US-Greenland history…

The territory is mostly self-ruled, but its foreign policy and security decisions are made in Denmark. The US has apparently considered purchasing Greenland before, including as recently as 1946 when president Harry Truman offered $100 million in gold to purchase it. Alas, poor Harry, he did not succeed in buying the ice sheet–covered landmass, but the US does have a military base there where it basically has free rein. So that’s nice.
