Special Counsel Robert Mueller, perhaps unintentionally, just ruined House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler’s entire plan to get President Donald Trump.
During an interview Thursday night on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Nadler revealed that Mueller said he will not testify publicly about his Russia report.
This is a major blow for Nadler and Democrats, who want to use Mueller testifying publicly as a political stunt to smear and attack the president.
Nadler, visibly upset, told host Rachel Maddow that he doesn’t know why Mueller wants to testify privately as opposed to publicly.
“He is willing to make an opening statement but he wants to testify in private,” Nadler said. “We’re saying we think it’s important for the American people to hear from him and to hear his answers to questions about the report.”
Nadler said Mueller’s testimony in private would come with a transcript, but complained that the public would not be able to actually “hear” from the special counsel.
Nadler and Democrats have been practically begging Mueller to publicly testify about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
But Mueller is hesitant to appear publicly out of concerns it would seem political — which is a huge blow to Democrats.
“He envisions himself, correctly, as a man of great rectitude and apolitical and he doesn’t want to participate in anything that he might regard as a political spectacle,” Nadler said.
“Especially if Republicans on the committee start asking him questions about this stuff, about the beginning of the investigation,” he added.

Democrats desperately want Mueller to testify in public and in front of the cameras so they can try to disparage Trump.
But Mueller isn’t taking the bait and is refusing to testify in public, which is humiliating for Nadler and Democrats.
Mueller had originally been close to agreeing to testifying on May 15, but things reportedly fell apart when Democrats demanded the hearing be televised for the public.
Mueller’s argument is that he has spent the last two years behind closed doors and away from the media.
He doesn’t want to testify publicly and take part in what is obviously a political stunt from Democrats.
Nadler is not happy about this at all.
For the record, roughly 92 percent of the Mueller report has been made available to Congress and the public.
The only information that is redacted pertains to grand jury secrecy, meaning it would literally be against federal law for Attorney General William Barr to make available.
Beyond that, Democrats have been very busy lately ratcheting up crazy, utterly bizarre ideas lately.
But their political stunt has backfired, and now apparently Mueller is refusing to take part in their circus and attempt to smear the president.
