Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., delivered her first House floor speech on Thursday, and she wasted little time attacking President Donald Trump.
In her roughly 3-minute speech, Ocasio-Cortez blamed Trump for the partial government shutdown, accused him of starving people, and said his demands for a border wall have resulted in “the erosion of American democracy.
“It is actually not about a wall, it is not about the border, and it is certainly not about the well-being of everyday Americans. The truth is, this shutdown is about the erosion of American democracy and the subversion of our most basic governmental norms,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She then accused Trump of starving people.
“It is not normal to hold 800,000 workers’ paychecks hostage. It is not normal to shut down the government when we don’t get what we want. And it is certainly not normal to starve the people we serve for a proposal that is wildly unpopular among the American people,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez went on to share the story of one of her constituents, an air traffic controller who she said is one of the 800,000 federal workers who missed their first paychecks last week due to the funding lapse.
“Federal workers’ jobs are stressful enough,” she said, before claiming Trump pushes “anti-immigrant sentiment.”
Quite amazing to see a member of Congress, without any evidence at all, accuse the president of the United States of starving people.
The New York socialist also placed all of the blame on Trump, which simply is not true.
Trump has been determined to get at least $5 billion in funding for the wall amid the government shutdown, which is nearing its fourth week.
POLL: Who do you blame for the Government shutdown – Trump or the Democrats?
The bill is waiting a full vote in the Senate, where lawmakers are hashing it out over funding for border security.
Democrats originally offered $1.6 billion, which they claimed was “very generous,” but have since agreed to only give $1 for the wall.
Democrats have also boycotted meetings at the White House to negotiate reopening the government.
In fact, over 30 Democrats joined 109 lobbyists last weekend for a retreat in Puerto Rico, another indication that they do not care about the partial shutdown.
Ocasio-Cortez, of course, didn’t mention any of that.
According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, approval for Trump’s proposed wall has soared in popularity with American voters across the board, especially with swing-state voters.
The poll also shows that there’s an increase in support for the wall among nearly all demographic groups across the country.
The first immigration poll of the year also spells bad news for Democrats, many of which are refusing to strike a deal with Trump on securing the border.
According to a Economist/YouGov survey, 93 percent of Americans say illegal immigration is a problem.
While Democrats have refused to strike a deal to reopen the government and fund the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, it appears an overwhelming majority agrees with Trump on the immediate need to secure the border.
